Bushman is back at rhs chelsea 2024
After a 14-year hiatus, Bushman Wood Fired Ovens are once again making a mark at the Chelsea Flower Show, this time in the "Freedom from Torture" charity show garden. Previously, despite the organisers' admiration for our creativity, they couldn't envision a place for wood fired ovens in the quintessential English garden. This year, however, marks a triumphant return, not at the behest of the show’s organisers, but thanks to the visionary talents of landscape architects John Warland and Emma, who were entrusted with crafting a mesmerising garden that will continue to serve as a sanctuary for survivors long after the show concludes.
John and Emma envisioned an oven that epitomised the essence of the earth—handcrafted, tactile, and seamlessly integrated within the natural beauty of the garden, nestled amongst lush plants and woven willows. The design brief called for the oven to harmonise with the natural tones of stone and willow, incorporating a wood-gas hybrid system to ease operation and minimise emissions during the show.
Building the chelsea oven
Crafting an oven that weighed 600kg to perch elegantly on a half-ton stone base while accommodating a gas bottle presented a unique set of challenges. However, collaborating closely with John Warland and Emma O'Connell on every meticulous detail proved to be a rewarding journey. This project not only showcases the meticulous craftsmanship of Bushman Ovens, made from the finest refractory materials and individually handcrafted in England, but also redefines the role of wood fired ovens in English gardens—as the vibrant heart of any entertainment space.
This installation at the Chelsea Flower Show demonstrates that gardens are more than just places to cultivate plants; they are havens from the fast pace of everyday life, spaces for savoring excellent food prepared in exceptional ovens, and areas for creating enduring memories. Our hope is that the survivors who interact with this garden and our oven will find a sense of peace and tranquillity, and that this space will energise and inspire them for many years to come.
